iCryo Cryotherapy, the leading Cryotherapy franchise in the United States, announced Tuesday that Dallas Cowboys', Jaylon Smith, will be joining the company as an equity partner.
According to Smith, if you haven't tried cryotherapy yet, you and your body are missing out.
Smith, prior to his injury in the Fiesta Bowl, was projected to be the Top 3 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Dallas Cowboys selected Smith in the second round (34th overall) of the Draft.
In 2018, Cowboys Head coach, Jason Garrett, named Smith the starting middle linebacker for the regular season, ending the season with 121 combined tackles (82 solo), two forced fumbles, and 4 sacks in 16 games.
What Is Cryotherapy?
Around since the 1700s, cryotherapy is the process of using extremely cold temperatures to decrease pain and muscle spasms, improve recovery, slow cell aging, and improve overall health.
For decades, athletes have soaked in cold tubs and ice baths, but as technology has improved and evolved, the 21st century now has this form of therapy which allows the individual to emerge themselves into a body-sized chamber, or "cryo-chamber," up to the neck, having liquid nitrogen sprayed into the air to bring skin temperature down to below -200°F.
"Recovery has been very important to me," Smith told us. "Dealing with my injury and what I went through, I have been looking for ways to help promote healing, not just for myself, but for others on the field."
Jaylon Smith's "3 C's" for Investment
We asked why Smith decided to invest in iCryo and what factors he looks at when considering investment options.
"As an entrepreneur, I'm always looking for companies to invest in that align with my criteria," Smith told us.
"I use the '3 C's'—chemistry, character, and competence. This is something that anybody I am looking to partner with, must align in those three places, from a core value standpoint. iCryo possessed all three of those qualities. […] This is something I am going to be promoting because I believe in it; I've used it in my personal life, and it's just beginning."
MSNBC: How would you describe the on-going and back and forth transition between NFL athlete to entrepreneur? Are you finding it difficult to take on and off that hat?
Jaylon Smith: It comes natural to me, because I've wanted to be an entrepreneur my entire life. Football is the thing that I love and very elite at. But, you must be able to turn on and off that switch. When I'm in the facility and on that field, I am all football. But, I'm able to transition and be that business man and business owner and investor. It's all about time management. I have a team around me that helps get the job done, so I'm not doing this alone, which helps.
MSNBC: How long have you been using cryotherapy?
JS: About a year ago, before the 2018 regular season, I fell in love with it. I have been doing cryotherapy at our practice facility, The Star, in Dallas. At the same time, I was even traveling to Houston to learn more about iCryo and the benefits that come along with it. The product and service they offer is amazing, and I fell in love with their vision. I wanted to be part of the family and was able to become an equity partner, and now we are moving forward.
MSNBC: Why do you think this new form of therapy is so attractive to athletes, celebrities, and now millennials?
JS: Most definitely, the timing. It's one thing to go sit in an ice bath for ten minutes or have the freezer packet on you for 20 minutes, but it's another thing entirely to have cryotherapy and iCryo available, where you get in for less than 3 minutes and you're getting that treatment.
It's promoting healing, life, good energy, good vibes, and re-energizing yourself. It's all about how fast you can recover. The mark of greatness is consistency, and cryotherapy has done that for me. So, why not align myself with an amazing brand with great owners and a vision to spread cryotherapy across the country?"
MSNBC: How has cryotherapy specifically addressed your post-injury recovery?
JS: From a recovery process, allowing me to get back to full throttle faster and quicker and at a consistent basis, has helped improved my mental because of the process—freezing my cells and allowing myself to welcome the regeneration process.
The Upcoming 2019 Cowboys Season
Of course, we were curious on what the upcoming 2019 NFL season will be looking like for the Cowboys, as they have made a number of changes post-season.
MSNBC: What are you most excited for in the upcoming season?
JS: The culture. We have already built our culture, so we understand exactly what we will be bringing to the table. We've added pieces that will improve our team tremendously. Now, it's about cultivating it, getting that chemistry re-amped and ready to go.
