Mark Minard is a husband, and father of five. He is the owner and founder of Dreamshine, which proudly serves individuals with special needs. He's the owner and host of the world- famous podcast, Elevating Beyond, with over three million downloads worldwide! He's also the best selling author of, The Story of YOU, Transforming Adversity Into Adventure, Taking Your Dreams To The Next Level & Beyond! He's just an ordinary dude, with an extraordinary faith, believing all things are possible.
Mark opened the doors to Dreamshine 13+ years ago and happens to know a thing or two about entrepreneurship. Here is shares the top two myths about being an entrepreneur.
Myth #1: If you love the work you do, you'll never have to work another day in your life.
If you do what you love, you'll actually work harder than you have ever worked in your entire life. It is your WHY that bridges the gap. Many businesses fail because entrepreneurs' WHY sucks. Mark argues that you must ask yourself these critical questions, or your business WILL fail:
Why did you start your business? Was it because you were just tired of working for someone else? Was it because you though you could get rich quick?
Mark remembers exactly why he started Dreamshine and when the process started for him. He was working in Columbus, Ohio, in the field of working with individuals with special needs: ultimately he was offered a job teaching special education. As soon as he got the job he started to educate himself on the issues special needs people are confronted with. It broke his heart to see how limited their lives were in so many ways, and he realized something had to change.
Mark made it his mission and his WHY to fight for the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities. Had he not done this they would still be stuck in the horrible institutions and warehouses that the stated owned and controlled the funding for.
Now, 13 years later, Mark and his team are honored to serve more than 55 individuals with developmental disabilities on a beautiful 2.5 acre campus which looks and feels like a resort. Dream shine employs 20+ team members aka the 'Dream Team,' and are honored to be growing and elevating everyday.
Was it easy? NO! Was it worth it? YES!
Myth #2: Passion is Connected to Feelings. Mark agrees - passion is a good thing, but most people think being passionate means you are going to be holding pom moms jumping up and down and cheering every day about how awesome it is to be an entrepreneur.
Truthfully, real passion is connected to your foundational why. Real passion, the kind which endures, has nothing to do with feelings, and everything to do with your why.
Most people fall into the myth that passion is connected to feelings. And as soon as the storms hit, because your foundation is not built upon your why, your passion washes away.
TRUTH BOMB: "If there is a 'secret' to success, I'll sum it up in one work: PERSEVERANCE" - Mark Minard
Think of the book The Tortoise and The Hare. The tortoise enters the race, even though he lacked the talent. Because the tortoise had real passion (PERSEVERANCE), which is built upon character & connected to his why, he continued to persevere. One step at a time, and ends up winning the race.
The next time you think about giving up, Mark urges you to do this:
Make a WHY list 1. If I were to give up on ______, how many people will be affected?
(Don't just think about the now - look into your vision manifested and all the lives who will be negatively impacted if you were to give up on your dream.
2. What if Steve Jobs gave Up? What if Mark Zuckerberg gave up? What if Tomas Edison gave up?
Every time you are going through hard times, look at this list. Allow it to remind you of your whys, pushing to persevere.
